There is a Sicily that cannot be found merely in tourist guides, but must be experienced with the heart. It is the Sicily of the villages which, on the day dedicated to their patron saint, pause to celebrate their roots. In Lascari, a stone’s throw from the sea and in the shadow of the Madonie mountains, the Feast of the Holy Cross is the event that can transform your holiday into an unforgettable memory.
The anticipation begins in the days leading up to the event with the evocative “Sciacculata”. Imagine the village shrouded in twilight, lit only by the flickering glow of the sciaccole, ancient torches made of wild grass and carried by hand. It is an ancestral ritual, punctuated by the beat of drums, which will transport you back through the centuries, into an almost mystical atmosphere.
The celebrations reach their peak on Sunday afternoon. The streets are filled with colour and sound: these are the 12 ‘Apostles’, the bearers of the large wooden crucifix, who parade barefoot, dressed in white with a red sash around their waists. It is a moment of rare intensity, where faith becomes a spectacle and the community gathers around its most cherished symbol, which – according to legend – was created by the skilled hands of a shepherd in the caves of these lands.
As well as the religious aspect, taking part in the Lascari festival also means immersing yourself in the atmosphere of an authentic Sicilian street festival. Your gaze is immediately drawn to the spectacular illuminations – veritable structures of light that embroider the night sky and transform the village streets into a glittering corridor. As you stroll, your senses are tantalised by the enveloping aroma of local street food delicacies that fill the squares, inviting you to discover the island’s truest flavours. The whole day is punctuated by the lively notes of the marching bands that accompany every moment of the celebrations, keeping the rhythm of folklore and collective joy high.
The event reaches its climax with the grand finale of the fireworks, a pyrotechnic display that lights up the Sicilian night and can be admired in all its magnificence even from the surrounding hills.
